Artzi Stuff

i just delivered these few small pieces of my mixed media work to a lovely little boutique gallery in Nanaimo....it is called Artzi Stuff .....this gallery has had artwork from other  Gabriola Island artists long before me....people like Shena Meadowcroft  and Simone Bell ....the shop is owned and operated by Tanya Streeter Wilson who is an artist herself....she does really great silk screening and textile work as well as other types of mixed media art......

we are planning to have a solo show of my mixed media paintings in september.... in the meantime, there are a few pieces already showing there......check it out if you are in the area...it is a delightful shop...!

The Birds and the Bees

wow, the birds and the bees are coming on strong....springtime is here and there is much activity outside and inside my studio.......i am having so much fun playing with the decorative aspect of both my glass and paintings....

12" sq decorative  "bird and bees" platter

"bee and piano" 12" sq. platter

and the motifs are really working with each other in this series......the paintings were both done on paper first, playing around and then glued onto wood panels and the played with some more....i think they are done but ya never know.....

"2 birds" 18" oval

the glass is more of my homemade sheet glass....well, i'm not actually manufacturing glass now or anything....just creating designs on regular coloured sheets of glass for later use in different bowls and platters....

10" sq. "polka dot flower pot" plate

enjoying the process right now...... it can change quickly, but right now it's all groovy......

Fun Times with Beach Plywood and Paint.....

yes, of course i know....there have been sooo many bees and chickens coming out of my studio this year.....what's it all about you ask?? well, i'm not totally sure....some of it is just the fact that i feel that bees are somewhat under appreciated, considering all the amazing hard work that they do to help sustain our lives on this planet....and, i love the graphic contrast of yellow and black, the stripes being so bold.....
honey bee on beach plywood

i found these chunks of plywood on the beach when we were out camping and they were perfect canvases....i really really love the texture and imperfections.....i am crazy for imperfections actually....and if anything is too perfect (to my eye) i lose interest in exploring it further.....that does not mean i do not appreciate well done work of any kind....i am seriously impressed with the skill level required to create highly technical, perfect work.....it just doesn't make my heart leap....my intellect sees and appreciates, my heart is unimpressed....

i guess this is why i LOVE children's art soooo much.............

"don't be a chicken about love"

and i suppose my work sometimes looks rather child-like as well.....i was told by one of my mentors (i'm fortunate to have more than one!!!)......."don't resist"........i like this sentiment....if ya wanna paint another funky chicken then just go ahead and paint it.....and if you must scribble, then go for it....i have found a lot of power in scribbling...if you allow......it will take you places.... guaranteed....don't be a chicken with your playtime....follow your heart and instincts....xoxoxo

Happy Spring Bees and Flowers

Coming up soon, next weekend in fact! june 18 and 19..... my 1st annual  Spring Show and Sale...just under the wire to be a spring show!!!!
8 x 8 mixed media on panel

I am busy as a bee these days.....whew!!! annnnd, i LOVE seeing and hearing sooo many bees around lately...this makes me very happy...they are buzzzzzing around my kale plants that have totally gone to flower cause i have been soooooooooooo consumed with other things!!!! still, i am eating kale every day..i LOVE it....and have been reluctant to cut back the plants because the bees are so happy there....the kale are like small trees right now, as tall as me!!!!!!!!!!!!

sketchbook tulips...5 minute painting

and earlier this spring we had bright red tulips all over....big bursts of colour! awesome to see, they had huge flowers on them...just so full of life....the 1st time for me to have tulips in my garden....although "garden" suggests that there is some tending going on....lush jungle would be more accurate...good thing i like things on the wild side....

detail of bee bowl, brand new 20" diameter

more bees in glass, on wood and a variety of combinations, as you've seen on other posts....i find that when the imagery really feels right it will appear and reappear for years to come....like fish, and leaves, flowers and fruit, even vegetables....  i liked dill pickle wind chimes the best, haven't made them for a while, maybe because i have not canned up real edible dill pickles for a long while either...buffalo, horses, birds, chickens, eggs.....bees are one of my favourite little beings right now.....
