Making Art While Traveling
It's not always easy to see what might come from my playing and painting when I'm away from my studio for extended times like when we travel.
My mobile studio this winter in India was a sheet of plywood propped against the wall, and I sat on the floor in front and painted. I worked on paper, often so many layers of paint that the paper began to feel almost like canvas. I generally worked fairly quickly since the acrylic paint would dry out very fast.
Some of these images have clues and ideas, bits and pieces that work and are already inspiring me. The inspiration is often indirect and not totally obvious, however this time around I think I can see now, after 2 months at home, what is sticking around for more exploration.

You can see more up to date highlights from my current studio explorations on my Instagram page.
What do you think? do you see connections?
Colours of India, Sacred (and fun!) Travels
I love to travel.
It feeds my heart and soul. Every astrology reading I've had has told that me that I am meant to spend time in countries and cultures different from my own, that this kind of travel is essential to the well being of my soul.
I agree 100%.
Actually I believe travel benefits everyone, to be exposed to so much that is different from one's own little world can be very liberating and I think creates deeper compassion, love and acceptance.
The last two years we've spent considerable time in South India. There is so much to love about this rich culture. Amazing colours, aromas, rituals and also fantastic beaches and the beauty of the Arabian Sea. Ahhhhhhhh.......
Here are a few pix of my most recent travels. I love connecting with women and girls. The markets are the best place to have those kinds of interactions, even when you don't speak the same language you can share a smile and often a laugh too.

Bluerock Gallery, A Prairie Gem
Prairie Dream Trip!
We had a wonderful day driving down to the Bluerock Gallery in the hamlet of Black Diamond, in spacious and beautiful southern Alberta.
Bluerock Gallery is a precious gem of a gallery. I felt excited to see my mixed media paintings very well displayed. All of my work was out on display, which isn't always the case in galleries.
This destination gallery is very well curated, with each artist represented having a clear voice and style of their own. Ceramics, glass, felted art, paintings, jewelry, bronze displayed in all directions.Â
I was also impressed to see an eclectic and interesting book selection. Titles such as Rumi, Mary Oliver, Elizabeth May and many more authors.
I loved it there!
I felt kindred spirit alive and well, like arriving to something familiar and known, yet all new and exciting.....mmmmmmm.....precious indeed.
Thank you Karen Gimbel and Isis for your creative vision. I am honoured to be part of your gallery.
As we drove home, the day ended with an epic moon rise out one side of the car while the sun was setting out the other.....the prairies glowing....mmmmmmm.
One World, Atlas Affair Jan.30!
This Saturday, Jan.30th! The highly anticipated Gabriola Arts Council Atlas Affair event happens.
Last fall the Gabriola Arts Council gave participating island artists a map or atlas as inspiration to create an artwork for this show.
I didn't have an idea for this until late December.
I was finishing up orders and wrapping up my year end. I didn't have any creative brain power for a new project with a theme at that time. I did have an idea that perhaps a signpost would work with the theme of maps.
I gave myself time and space and in early January and I started making the glass signs you see below.
Shortly after I made the first few signs I knew that it could work and Ode started to make the steel post. I ordered super strong rare earth magnets (from Lee Valley) to hold the glass to the steel.
This way the piece can be easily moved, and the signs are interchangeable. I think that makes it kinda FUN.
Our piece will be one of many original ART works to be auctioned at the event! It is exciting and fun. Last year sold out, so get your tix NOW!
Hope to SEE you there!
Hello 2016, I love you!
I am excited about all the possibilities that come with a new beginning, a new year!
It always feels fresh and alive when I am beginning something new. So a new year is something to celebrate!
I don't make resolutions...I find that feels restrictive and kind of punishing....especially at a time when I am finally learning to treat myself, my world, my relationships with more gentleness and kindness.
I have intentions instead.
To start my intentions this year I will share one thing: (more to follow, stay tuned)
“Leave more room for unplanned space in my schedule.” My experience has been that quite possibly magic arrives in the spaces in between......I want to leave room for mystery and play.
"If we are always chasing after hobbies how will we have time for bliss?"

Solstice Spirit Studio (what a finish!)
Yay! I packed and shipped my last art for the year 2015!
I always hold sacred the art that I ship out to new homes.
These pieces feel even more so as the requests for this work only arrived after I sent out my December newsletter.
My newest painting found a home almost instantly. It is named "Seafarers", and they are indeed seafaring as they sail off on a trip that will encompass 3 ferry rides before finally getting hOMe to a remote island.
The Sacred Salmon heads to the tall grass prairies, and the Spirit Totem goes to the even wilder far west coast.
I had some help with packing this time...well, more accurately I would say I "allowed" Ode to help me this time.
2016 will see me bringing in more systems to assist me in my biz! and more opportunities for me to share my art with you.
Think cool graphics of my art on tote bags, pillows and cards. Watch for it!
Thank YOU all so much for supporting my art, my studio.
p.s. you can see under "giving back" in the menu on this site all of the things you help to support when you support my studio. It all makes the world a better place. Thank you. xoxoxo
Blessings to YOU
Hey gorgeous you....
I find winter Solstice is a wonderful time to retreat.
I am grateful to have the opportunity to have an offline, off grid, by the seashore in a rustic cabin getaway.
It feels very natural to me to SLOW down during these dark days of winter's arrival.
I do however, have a few plans...to walk, to breath, to play, to get quiet with my loved ones, to connect with nature.
And maybe, just maybe...if there is FLOW and no pressure I may dive into my new Leonie Dawson "Shining Year in Biz 2016" workbook!
Meanwhile, beauteous peeps...here are a few of my spirited friends to keep you company. They are filled with as much spirit and love as you would find if you visited my studio.
With so much gratitude.
EnJOY your season, however it plays out for you.
p.s. stay tuned in the New Year for new opportunities to connect with my paintings! I plan to offer cards, prints, buttons, pencil cases and pillow slips! you will be able to cozy up to a soft and lovable donkey pillow!
Glass Flowers + Glass Trees!
We recently did a quick trip down to Victoria, to the West End Gallery.
For a timely delivery of seasonal spirit and love.
As you can see I created some tabletop fused glass trees.
The idea for small trees has been in my mind for awhile...I made one awhile ago....so I created 2 more. They look great solo and in a grouping.
By small I mean about 24" tall with a round steel base. Very sturdy and balanced. For a tabletop or windowsill.
I LOVE trees. They are special to me every day of the year.
It is fun to honour them, in the spirit of this season.
Trees are always, in ALL WAYS revered in my world.
The trees and poinsettias will be showing at the West End Gallery, Victoria and Edmonton.
We also snapped a couple of pix of my Totems and other sculptures in the front window!! of the gallery when we were there.
Thank YOU West End Gallery for creating such beautiful galleries to show (and sell!) my work.
